Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has opened new Polish Consulate General in Houston, Texas, the Polish Foreign Ministry wrote in a press release.

Minister Waszczykowski speaking during the inauguration ceremony, stressed the new office will offer Poles living in the US Midwest better access to consular services.

"We hope that the new Consulate General in Houston will boost the development of closer relations with Texas," said the minister. "Apart from standard consular services for the large Polish community, the consulate will also implement a number of tasks linked with economic, public and cultural diplomacy, embracing, among others, cooperation with numerous US and international companies and organisations," said Waszczykowski.

The Houston consulate will cover seven US Midwest states with an estimated Polish population of some 550,000, or seven percent of the entire, eight million-strong, Polish diaspora in the US. Some 228,000 Poles or persons of Polish descent live in Texas, around 50,000 of them in Houston. (PAP)
