Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, has said that the European Sky Shield Initiative, which currently includes 21 countries, should become a pan-European project.

The former socially-conservative Law and Justice (PiS) government was wary about joining the air-defence initiative, calling it "a German project".

But the Donald Tusk government, which took office last December, changed the policy and Tusk himself had previously declared Poland would join the European Sky Shield Initiative.

"Europe will be safe on condition that the sky over Europe is safe, so a safe sky over Europe must also become a European project," Tusk said at the European Economic Congress in the southern city of Katowice on Tuesday, also attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Tusk went on to say that "the financial effort to build a 'dome' over Europe seems to be an obvious and relatively non-conflicting issue." (PAP)
