Polish president, PM aligned on security issues

Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Prime Minister Donald Tusk share the same views on security issues, Rafal Leskiewicz, the president's spokesman, said on Friday.

Nawrocki and Tusk, who met earlier on Friday, discussed peace conditions for Ukraine and their "cooperation regarding the most important matters for Poland, including security," Leskiewicz said.

Tusk said after the meeting that he and the president agreed that the security of Ukraine, Russia and Poland "should be excluded from political disputes." He added that both leaders were committed to presenting "a single, unified position of the state on matters concerning Poland's security."

"This must absolutely be our joint effort," Tusk said, adding that Poland's security largely depends on how the war in Ukraine ends, as well as on Ukraine's position during peace negotiations and in the post-war period.

According to Leskiewicz, given Poland's proximity to Ukraine, which is defending itself against Russia's invasion, "we must speak in one voice, and the president and the prime minster confirmed during their meeting today that they share such views."

Both leaders also reiterated the principle of "nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine," and that "peace could be agreed upon only on conditions which are approved by Ukraine."

According to Leskiewicz, Nawrocki further emphasised that neither the Russian Federation nor President Vladimir Putin could be trusted. He warned that negotiators engaging with Putin, as well as participants in meetings of the so-called Coalition of the Willing, should judge Russia not by its statements but by its actions.

The spokesman added that responsibilities in foreign policy had been clearly outlined: direct talks with the United States fall within the president's scope of duties, while meetings of the Coalition of the Willing and gatherings of European leaders were the domain of the prime minister.

The right-wing presidential camp has been at odds with the centrist Tusk government since Nawrocki took office in August 2025. Clashes have concerned ambassadorial appointments, representation at foreign meetings and exchange of information between the Presidential Palace and the Prime Minister's Office. (PAP)
