The Krakow-Balice international airport handled a record-high 4,983,645 passengers last year, 18 percent more than in 2015, the Krakow Airport company announced on Monday.

The airport had 760,000 more passengers in 2016 as well as reporting a 15-percent increase in the number of flight operations, which totalled 41,900.

The increased passenger traffic at Krakow's airport last year reflects the region's demand for air transport, according to Krakow Airport CEO Radoslaw Wloszek. "Expanding the network to include direct flights as well as connections to the biggest European hubs, we are responding to expectations towards the airport", he said.

Forecasts for this year assume that passenger traffic will grow by 4-6 percent, the factors in this including the geopolitical situation and fuel prices.

Krakow-Balice is Poland's second-largest airport in terms of the number of passengers, and the biggest regional airport. This winter season it offers 65 regular flights to 57 airports in 17 countries, cooperating with 21 air carriers. (PAP)
