The biblical approach to exile is more flexible than contemporary law, Polish Episcopate Chairman Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki said during a Catholic-Jewish conference in Warsaw.
Exile is a matter much more serious than leaving one's country in search of a better life, Gadecki said. "It is linked not just to leaving one's homeland but also leaving it in connection with threats to one's life, health or freedom", he added.
The international conference, the first meeting in Poland of representatives of the International Jewish Committee on Interreligious Consultations (IJCIC), the Commission of the Holy See for Religious Relations with the Jews and the International Catholic Jewish Liaison Committee, focused on the problem of refugees.
Later on Monday, Righteous Among the Nations medals were awarded posthumously to three Polish women who had hidden and helped Jews during World War II. (PAP)
