'Drone' wins Poland's Word of the Year 2025
"Drone" ("dron" in Polish) has been named Word of the Year 2025 by the jury of a competition organised by the University of Warsaw and the Polish Language Foundation.
The second and third places went to "veto" (weto) and "space" (kosmos), respectively.
The public online vote produced a different ranking, with "space" emerging as the winner, followed by "drone" and "veto."
The Word of the Year competition has been organised by the Institute of Polish Language at the University of Warsaw and the Polish Language Foundation for 15 years. Each year, it selects words that best reflect important themes and events of the past 12 months.
This year, linguists and members of the public selected from a shortlist of 21 words whose frequency in the Polish press in 2025 was significantly higher than in preceding years. The list included such entries as "astronaut," "drone," "votes," "space," "apartment," "truce," and "court."
In the previous competition, the jury chose "coalition" (koalicja) as Word of the Year, while "artificial intelligence" (sztuczna inteligencja) topped the public vote. (PAP)
