FM Sikorski testifies as victim in spyware probe
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has given testimony as a victim in the investigation into the alleged use of Israeli Pegasus spyware by the country's former government to target prominent opposition politicians.
The Pegasus scandal first made headlines in Poland in 2021, when it was revealed that Law and Justice (PiS) government secretly acquired the spyware using funds from the Justice Fund, which were originally allocated to assist crime victims.
Sikorski reported on the X platform on Thursday that he "provided testimony to the National Prosecutor's Office as a victim in the case related to the use of Pegasus."
He expressed hope that "law and justice" would prevail and the perpetrators would be held accountable.
The illegal use of Pegasus to spy on opposition figures, lawyers and critics of the PiS government was confirmed by multiple sources, including Citizen Lab, a specialised unit at the University of Toronto, Apple and Amnesty International.
According to Adam Bodnar, the former justice minister in the current government, as many as 578 individuals were illegally surveilled between 2017 and 2022. (PAP)
