Iran should not possess nuclear weapons, Polish FM says

Iran is ruled by an "aggressive regime" that poses a potential threat to other countries and therefore should not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has said.

In an interview with private broadcaster Polsat News on Thursday, Sikorski described Iran's leadership as "a particularly brutal regime."

"We are witnessing more frequent uprisings, which are being suppressed with increasing brutality," he said. "The most recent crackdown is likely the bloodiest during the rule of the theocratic regime."

Human rights organisations estimate that tens of thousands of protesters were killed during the latest wave of unrest in December 2025 and January 2026.

"It is an aggressive regime... Just recall why the anti-missile base in Redzikowo in Poland was built," Sikorski said, referring to the US Aegis Ashore anti-missile base in northern Poland which became operational in recent years.

He further said that Iran "has been developing long-range missiles which could already reach Europe and, in the future, potentially the United States."

"So it's an aggressive regime that has sacrificed the future of its nation on the altar of attempts to acquire nuclear weapons," Sikorski said.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday that although some progress had been made in negotiations, significant differences remain between Washington and Tehran. She added that US President Donald Trump could consider a potential strike on Iran.

The US has been reinforcing its military presence in the region, a move some commentators interpret as possible preparation for military action.

On Thursday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned Polish citizens against travelling to Iran amid escalating tensions. (PAP)
