Poland and India condemn invading international borders, Polish FM says

Poland and India condemn the crossing of international borders, both by tanks and terrorists, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said at a press briefing during his visit to India.

On Monday, Sikorski met with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi.

According to a note published on the Indian Foreign Ministry's website, during the meeting Jaishankar said that "Poland should display zero tolerance for terrorism and not help fuel the terrorist infrastructure in India's neighbourhood," without specifying further.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) later posted a fragment of Sikorski's press conference for local media on X.

He told reporters that "Poland and India are countries that are interested in upholding the principles of international law."

"Both of our countries condemn the crossing of international borders, either by tanks or by terrorists," Sikorski said. "Both India and Poland are victims of transnational terrorists, and therefore we condemn it in the strongest terms," he added.

Sikorski further argued that Russia was sanctioned because it had broken "the Budapest Memorandum, under which Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons, and... the border treaty between the two countries, actually signed by [Russian President] Vladimir Putin, and... the UN Charter by invading another country with tanks."

"So in those circumstances, imposing sanctions, in other words, taking countermeasures by the international community against the aggressor, is justified," Sikorski said as cited by the MFA on X.

India has not openly condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine and continues trade relations with Moscow, while calling for dialogue between the conflicting parties. (PAP)
