Poland apprehends Russian hacker
A Russian national suspected of hacking the IT systems of several Polish firms has been detained in Krakow, southern Poland, the interior minister has reported.
Marcin Kierwinski reported on X on Thursday morning that the man, arrested by the Central Cybercrime Bureau (CBZC), was accused of "serious offences involving unauthorised interference with the ICT systems of Polish companies."
Investigators say the Russian suspect breached the security systems of an e-commerce platform, gaining access to and altering its databases. Prosecutors believe he may be linked to additional cybercrimes elsewhere in the European Union.
The hacker has been charged and placed in three-month pre-trial detention at the request of prosecutors.
Authorities also established that the man had entered Poland illegally in 2022 and was granted refugee status the following year. (PAP)
