Poland to buy from US air-to-air missiles for its F-35 fighter jets
Poland has ordered a delivery of 200 US-manufactured AIM-120D Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) for Poland's F-35 fighter jets, under a deal signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz on Thursday.
The purchase contract is valued at approximately USD 500 million net.
The upgraded D version of AMRAAM missiles will equip the 32 multi-task, hard-to-detect F-35 fighter jets Poland has ordered for its air force, the first of which are to be delivered next year.
Kosiniak-Kamysz said that signing this type of contract demonstrates that "the Polish-American alliance is not only words, but also decisions about the possibility to purchase equipment, obtain the latest technology."
The US State Department authorised the potential sale to Poland of 400 AMRAAM missiles for an estimated USD 1.3 billion in late April this year.
AMRAAM missiles form a core part of the US and NATO air force inventory. The older C type of the weaponry is used by the Polish Air Force to equip its F-16 fighter jets. (PAP)
