Poland detains several people over rail sabotage
The Polish security agencies have detained several people in connection with the recent acts of sabotage targeting a Polish railway line, the spokesman for the special services coordinator has said.
Jacek Dobrzynski declined to provide any details to reporters on Wednesday, saying that the investigation was still in progress.
"I can confirm that the first arrests are already being made," Dobrzynski said. "People involved are being detained by the ABW (Internal Security Agency - PAP) and police. At this stage I can't give you any more details."
He went on to say that several people had been detained already.
"These people are being interrogated and the roles of particular individuals in this terrorist attack are being established... The arrests are ongoing. We don't rule out further arrests," Dobrzynski said, adding that the people were being detained on Polish territory.
Over the weekend, Poland was shaken by two sabotage incidents along the railway line connecting Warsaw with the Dorohusk station on the border with Ukraine. In the first one, the railway track was blown up with an explosive, while in the second one damaged railway infrastructure forced a train carrying 475 passengers to stop abruptly. Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Tuesday said Warsaw had identified two Ukrainian nationals as the perpetrators who acted upon instructions received from Russian special services.
Earlier on Wednesday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced his decision to shut down the last remaining Russian consulate in Poland, in the northern city of Gdansk. (PAP)
