Poland’s financial support for international humanitarian organisations and UN agencies rose by nearly 50 percent last year, Sikorski said at a meeting on humanitarian aid organised by the European Commission on Tuesday. He added that while Ukraine remained the main beneficiary of the help, Poland also answered to the humanitarian needs in the Middle East and Africa.

He said that the scale of suffering in the world is currently shocking. According to him, data gathered by the UN suggests that right now 305 million people are in need of urgent help, and 80 percent of the instances are a result of armed conflicts.

Sikorski said that while the answer to this problem seems simple on the surface, armed conflicts arise from complex circumstances, and usually cannot be easily solved. Furthermore, in some cases, like the civil war in Sudan, he argued, even a ceasefire would not bring to an end the humanitarian needs of the region.

He added that there are also problems with the system of granting humanitarian aid itself, as according to him, for years the system has been underfunded and overloaded. (PAP)
