Poland withdraws all soldiers from Iraq, says defence minister
Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Polish defence minister, has said that all Polish soldiers have been evacuated from Iraq due to the worsening security situation in the Middle East.
Kosiniak-Kamysz added that most members of the Polish Military Contingent in Iraq have already been in Poland or are on their way to Poland.
"Due to the deterioration of security in the Middle East region, after analysing operational conditions and potential threats, a decision was made to relocate the Polish Military Contingent from Iraq," Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on the X platform on Friday.
The defence minister also said that the relocation process had been carried out in agreement with NATO allies, and that the operation had been coordinated by the Operational Command of the Armed Forces.
"The priority was to ensure maximum safety to the soldiers and employees of the Polish Military Contingent," Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
Having repeated that most of the contingent's personnel are already in Poland or on their way home, he said that some were in Jordan. "This enables the continuity of the Polish Military Contingent's operations in the region," Kosiniak-Kamysz said. (PAP)
