Polish uniformed service officer charged over killing of four-year-old
A 44-year-old officer of the State Protection Service (SOP) has been charged with the killing of his four-year-old daughter and the attempted manslaughter of four other family members following a knife attack in the northern town of Ustka.
Patryk Wegner from the local District Prosecutor's Office in Slupsk told reporters on Wednesday that the man had been questioned by prosecutors earlier that morning.
He confessed to the crimes and provided short explanations, which will not be made public at this stage as they require further verification, Wegner said.
The attack took place on Monday evening, when the man allegedly assaulted his family with a knife. The four-year-old girl died as a result of her injuries, while the man's wife, son and parents-in-law, as well as the suspect himself were taken to hospital.
The accused, who served 23 years in SOP, Poland's elite unit responsible for protecting senior government officials, was subsequently suspended and subject to a dismissal procedure.
According to the interior ministry, the man was stationed in Warsaw but was not directly involved in protecting the country's top officials. (PAP)
