The accident occurred at around 7:45pm near the town of Adamuz in the province of Cordoba, when the rear carriages of a high-speed train travelling from Malaga to Madrid became detached and collided with an oncoming train bound from Madrid to Huelva, which was carrying around 100 passengers.
At least 21 people were killed and 25 others injured in the crash, with five in serious condition.
Spain's Transport Minister Oscar Puente said that the cause of the accident was being investigated and described the circumstances as "difficult to explain." (PAP)
