The celebrations, marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany, are expected to gather leaders from Serbia, Slovakia, China and Brazil.

"To honour the end of World War II today on Red Square, in the shadow of the Kremlin, is not only political blindness, especially for a European," Tusk said during a press conference in Oosterbeek, the Netherlands, on Monday.

"No European has the right, cannot pretend not to see where the danger lurks and how important it is to maintain solidarity and European community," he added.

Tusk compared the current situation to the lead-up to both World Wars, pointing to the dangers of "political blindness, indifference, and ambiguity," as well as "tolerance for evil." He said that his purpose was to "very clearly and loudly say that Europe and the Western community can never make such a mistake again." (PAP)
