EU parliament strips two Polish MEPs of their immunity
The European Parliament (EP) on Tuesday lifted the immunity of two Polish MEPs and members of the socially conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, citing misuse of work duties and abuse of power.
The case of one of the two politicians, Michal Dworczyk, concerns the use of a private email account to share classified information while serving as the head of the Prime Minister's office from 2017 to 2022, when PiS was in government.
Meanwhile, the Parliament's decision on the second politician, Daniel Obajtek — who, as well as being a PiS party member, is a former CEO of the leading energy company ORLEN — was linked to two contracts given to detective services, allegedly arranged through ORLEN to serve his own private interests.
The EP's vote came months after Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Adam Bodnar addressed the respective submissions in 2024. The decision means that they, too, might now face criminal charges in Poland. (PAP)
