Former PM to take part in race for leadership of Law and Justice party
Mateusz Morawiecki, an MP and the former Polish prime minister, has said that he was prepared to take part in the race to become head of the Law and Justice (PiS) party once Jaroslaw Kaczynski, its current leader, steps down.
Morawiecki told the private broadcaster Radio ZET on Friday that he would like to take over the leadership of PiS once Jaroslaw Kaczynski retires.
"I would like the present leader to head PiS for as long as possible, because he's the one who unites our party," said Morawiecki. "But I'd also like to take part in this honourable race."
Kaczynski co-founded PiS with his late twin brother Lech in 2001 and has long-been the dominant force in the socially-conservative party.
When asked if he would also consider a run in the 2025 presidential election, Morawiecki said that "this decision will be taken by the PiS political committee in 10 or so months." (PAP)
