Hungary recalls ambassador to Poland ahead of PM's visit

Hungary's Foreign Minister Anita Orban has announced the recall of Hungary's ambassador to Poland, Istvan Ijgyarto, saying Polish-Hungarian relations are entering a "new phase" and require a new diplomatic approach.

In a social media post on Monday, Orban said the decision was linked to a shift in Hungary's foreign policy and the need for a new envoy in Warsaw capable of representing the government's new direction "credibly and consistently." She added that a high-level Hungarian delegation would visit Poland in the coming days to lay new foundations for bilateral cooperation.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar is due to begin his first foreign trip as head of government on Tuesday with a visit to Krakow, southern Poland, before travelling to Warsaw and Gdansk, northern Poland.

During the visit, Magyar is expected to meet Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President Karol Nawrocki, former president, labour activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Walesa and Cardinal Grzegorz Rys. After leaving Poland, the Hungarian prime minister will travel to Vienna. (PAP)
