The speaker of the US Congress, Nancy Pelosi, thanked the Polish nation for its support of Ukraine, following talks with the Polish president in Warsaw on Monday.
After a meeting of a high-level US Congressional delegation with President Andrzej Duda on Monday, Pelosi said in a statement: "In our meeting, our Members expressed America's deep gratitude to the Polish government and Polish people for opening their hearts and homes to Ukrainian refugees, and we reaffirmed our nation's pledge to continue supporting Poland's humanitarian efforts."
"Our meeting also focused on reaffirming our nations' joint commitment to further strengthening the U.S.-Polish partnership and the Nato alliance, both of which are vital to ensuring the triumph of our common democratic values and countering (Russian President Vladimir - PAP) Putin's dangerous aggression," the statement continued.
Pelosi told journalists that the talks had touched on humanitarian and economic support for the region as well as security aid. She said they had also discussed with US Ambassador to Poland Marek Brzezinski the possibility of expanding the Nato base in Poland.
Jakub Kumoch, head of the International Policy Bureau at the President's Office, said that while the meeting had primarily concerned Ukraine, relations with Poland were also discussed, which Kumoch said had been described by one US delegate as "the best in history."
"The president very clearly stated that he believes relations with the United States are key, regardless of who governs in Warsaw and Washington," Kumoch added.
On Sunday, Pelosi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, after which she flew to Rzeszow in south-eastern Poland before visiting Warsaw on Monday. (PAP)
