Ursula von der Leyen said in her annual address in Strasbourg on Wednesday that the European Union has learned a lesson from this war and should have listened to Poland, the Baltic States and Central and Eastern European countries that had for years been warning that Putin would not stop.

She also added that Europeans acted with the needed courage to do what should have been done and when the Russian Army crossed the Ukrainian border the whole EU reacted in solidarity. According to von der Leyen Europe can be proud of it.

"And I stand here with the conviction that with courage and solidarity, Putin will fail and Europe will prevail," von der Leyen said, adding: "Europe's solidarity with Ukraine will remain unshakeable." (PAP)
