Mueller's statement confirmed rumours that had been circulating on Wednesday morning about the possible return of Kaczynski to the government ahead of this autumn's general election.

"The head of our political camp, PiS president Jaroslaw Kaczynski, will become the only deputy prime minister," said Mueller in an interview for PAP.

"The other deputy prime ministers have resigned from the deputy PM functions but will remain ministers."

Later, Mueller told the state-owned broadcaster TVP Info that "the return of Jaroslaw Kaczynski to the government is a strengthening move before the elections and a clear signal that we are fighting for victory in the next election campaign."

He also said that he was pleased with Kaczynski's return.

Kaczynski resigned in June 2022 from his position as deputy prime minister and head of the security committee, which he led from October 2020, in order to concentrate on party affairs.

Earlier on Wednesday Jacek Sasin, the minister of state assets, confirmed his resignation from the post of deputy prime minister. "Yesterday evening, I submitted my resignation from the position of deputy of the Council of Ministers," Sasin said. (PAP)
