The news was announced on Wednesday by a spokeswoman for the Gliwice centre, Magdalena Markowska.

The transplant, which was performed by a team of surgeons led by Prof. Adam Maciejewski on a 37-year-old patient, involved organs including the larynx, trachea, esophagus and thyroid gland with adjacent glands, in addition to muscles and skin.

The American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery brings together more than 500 top international specialists in reconstructive surgery.

The Polish case won 93 percent of the vote during the society’s recent annual meeting, outperforming 300 other cases submitted by surgeons from around the world.

This marks another accolade for the Gliwice doctors from the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery after a face transplant that they have performed was voted the best microsurgical case in the world several years ago. (PAP)
