"We support the United States' decision to suspend its obligations resulting from the INF treaty. This decision is a justified response to the long-lasting violation of the treaty by the Russian Federation. We expect that Russia will return to full and verifiable compliance with the INF treaty," the Polish Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on Twitter.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Friday that the United States is suspending compliance with the INF treaty and will withdraw from it completely in six months' time if Russia does not end its alleged violation of the pact.

The US official expressed hope that Russia will change its policy and declared that the US is ready to hold arms control negotiations with Moscow.

The Soviet Union and the United States signed the INF treaty in 1987 in a bid to reduce tension between the two post-war adversaries and take a step towards nuclear disarmament. (PAP)
