Sejm passes resolution marking 1050th baptism anniversary
The Sejm (lower house) on Wednesday passed a resolution in which it expressed "gratitude to the founders of statehood and all the generations of Poles who faithfully stood by the principles defining our identity".
An identical resolution was passed by the Senate a week ago. The resolution will be read out during a sitting of the National Assembly in Poznan on April 15.
"The historic decision of Prince Mieszko I, who thanks to Princess Dobrava of Bohemia was baptised in 966, included us in the civilisation of Western Europe, which was soon to be confirmed at the Congress of Gniezno in the year 1000", reads the resolution passed by the lower chamber by acclamation.
The national celebrations of the 966 adoption of Christianity by Poland, marked by the baptism of its first ruler Mieszko I, will take place on April 14-16 in Gniezno and Poznan (western Poland). (PAP)
