The Polish foreign minister has declared after meeting his Japanese counterpart that their countries will tighten economic cooperation for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.

Zbigniew Rau and Yoshimasa Hayashi met in Warsaw on Friday. After the talks, Rau said that Japan is Poland's strategic partner in the Far East and that political cooperation between the two countries is "exemplary."

"We remain committed to ensuring absolute respect for the principles of international law in every part of the world, both in Europe and in the Indo-Pacific area," he said.

"For this purpose, we have decided to formalise our cooperation in the field of security,"  said Rau. "We are considering, together with the minister, a Polish initiative to create a regular dialogue on security, in which the ministers of both foreign affairs and defence of our countries will participate."

He added that now the cooperation of companies from both countries in the reconstruction of Ukraine will be "an important area of Polish-Japanese economic relations."

Hayashi said that the intensity of bilateral political contacts proves that Japan attaches great importance to relations with Poland.

"In relation to the situation in Ukraine, I would once again like to express my deep appreciation for Poland, which plays the role of a military and humanitarian support hub, standing on the front line of aid for Ukraine," he said.

Hayashi assured Rau that "Japan will continue to cooperate with Poland to end Russia's aggression against Ukraine as soon as possible and to establish a just and lasting peace."

"We agreed on the importance of cooperation with Poland in the public and private sectors for the reconstruction of Ukraine," he added. (PAP)
