Poland urges other EU states to end Russian oil imports by end-2026
Polish Energy Minister Milosz Motyka has sent an appeal to his European peers to set a common goal of completely stopping imports of Russian oil by the end of 2026.
Motyka reported on his letter on the X platform on Wednesday.
"Poland is consistently working to ensure energy security in the region and throughout Europe," Motyka wrote in the announcement. "Today, I sent a letter to the energy ministers of EU member states calling for a common goal to be set – to completely end imports of Russian crude oil by the end of 2026."
The current EU target is the end of 2027.
But Motyka said an earlier termination would be a clear signal that Europe can show solidarity and determination in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
"Poland has already become independent from Russian fuels - now the time has come for joint, ambitious actions of the whole EU," he added.
Hungary and Slovakia are the only remaining EU member states that buy Russian oil and gas delivered through pipelines.
US President Donald Trump has recently pressured the EU to stop buying Russian energy commodities while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced an initiative to speed up the process. (PAP)
