BLIK carried out its first cross-border mobile transfer from a Portuguese payment system to a Polish BLIK user during the Web Summit 2025 conference in Lisbon.

The demonstration "marked the launch of the pilot phase of a project designed to integrate BLIK with other European mobile payment systems, allowing users to send money directly to one another via phone number," the company stated in a press release on Wednesday.

In the first stage, the pilot programme covers mobile transfers sent by users registered with partner payment systems operating in Europe — starting with Portugal's MB WAY, followed by Spain's Bizum, Italy's Bancomat and Scandinavia's Vipps. On the Polish side, participants currently include a group of Santander BP customers, with PKO BP users to follow.

The project is being developed under the EuroPA association, which BLIK joined in May 2025.

International mobile transfers between users of different mobile payment systems are based on the SEPA Instant transfer system, which supports real-time money transfers in euros.

Developed by a consortium of six Polish banks, BLIK was introduced in 2015 and now boasts 3.8 million users. The system enables users to withdraw cash and transfer funds directly through their mobile banking apps using only phone numbers.

For payments in stores or online, users simply enter a unique six-digit BLIK code generated in their banking app — eliminating the need for physical bank cards during transactions. (PAP)
