Poland's lower house speaker will not run for party chairmanship

The Speaker of Poland's lower house and founder of the centre-right Poland 2050 party, Szymon Holownia, has passed on the chance of being re-elected as the party's chairman, saying the it is the right time to "pass the torch."

Holownia, who founded the party five years ago, said on Saturday after a meeting of the National Council of Poland 2050, that he had given the political grouping "what I could and what I knew," vowing to continue his activities within the scope requested.

"But the leader's role is also to pass the torch at some point. I believe this moment has come both for me and the organisation," the politician continued.

Holownia underlined that the move comes roughly two years before Poland's parliamentary elections, expressing hope for a victory in the 2027 voting under the new party chairman.

Poland 2050, the party founder added, has a "special place" in his heart and voiced plans to remain its member.

"Of course I'm not going anywhere. I will serve advice, I will serve and support, I will tour Poland to speak with our structures," Holownia pledged.

In 2023, Holownia assumed the role of the Sejm speaker and will end his tenure in mid-November. On Saturday, he also said that his plans after stepping down as speaker do not include joining the government, despite being offered the post of deputy prime minister. (PAP)
