Polish court upholds EAW for former deputy justice minister
The Regional Court in Warsaw dismissed on Friday an application to recall a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) against a former deputy justice minister, Marcin Romanowski, accused of defrauding public money under the previous government, the court's press office has reported.
Romanowski, a deputy justice minister in Poland's previous government led by the socially conservative Law and Justice (PiS), currently an MP for the party, is the subject of a major criminal investigation regarding the misuse of the Justice Fund, a reserve designed to assist victims of crime, which the suspect oversaw.
Romanowski has fled Poland, first hiding in Hungary under the protection of the former prime minister, Viktor Orban, and currently in an unknown location. According to media reports, he may be staying in a Balkan state.
An EAW was issued against Romanowski in February this year.
In June, private RMF radio broadcaster said that Romanowski's defence motioned to recall the EAW citing public reports of his sightings in Serbia, a non-EU member state where the EAW does not apply.
"I hereby inform that as per the ruling of July 10, 2026... the Regional Court in Warsaw rejected the application of Marcin Romanowski's defence counsel to recall a European Arrest Warrant," announced the court's spokesperson, Anna Ptaszek. (PAP)
