Polish ultra-nationalist MEP hit with 7 offenses
The Polish ultra-nationalist Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and former presidential candidate, Grzegorz Braun, faces seven indictments, including one for dousing Hanukkah candles in the parliament building in late 2023.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office wrote that, in addition to the incident involving the Hanukkah candles, the politician faced charges for interrupting a lecture on the Holocaust at the German Historical Institute located in Warsaw. Further charges were placed against Braun for removing and then discarding a Christmas tree at a court in the southern city of Krakow in early 2023.
Another indictment concerns events that occurred in 2022 at the National Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw, where the MEP appeared without wearing a face mask, a then-mandatory measure amid the Covid-19 pandemic. He later barged into a meeting of the facility's management and attacked the then-director Dr Lukasz Szumowski.
The Warsaw Regional Court of Praga-Poludnie will now review the indictments. (PAP)
