Port of Gdynia welcomes largest ever container ship following key upgrades
Poland's Port of Gdynia welcomed on Friday the first 399-metre container ship following extensive reconstruction that enabled it to accommodate the largest vessels in the Baltic Sea.
Measuring 399 metres long and 54 metres wide, the MSC Venice is the largest vessel ever to call at the port. It is set to depart for Lithuania on July 27.
Kalina Gierblinska, Port of Gdynia spokesperson, said that the vessel's arrival was made possible by an infrastructure investment programme carried out in recent years, which prepared the port to handle Baltmax-class ships, the largest container vessels capable of operating in the Baltic Sea.
Following a visit to the ship, Deputy Infrastructure Minister Arkadiusz Marchewka said that thanks to these investments, the port "has joined the top tier and is capable of handling the world's largest container ships."
The upgrades now enable the port to serve vessels up to 400 metres in length with a draught of up to 14.5 metres. (PAP)
