Sharing his opinion on the X platform on Thursday, Tusk wrote: "Dear Republican Senators of America. Ronald Reagan, who helped millions of us to win back our freedom and independence, must be turning in his grave today. Shame on you."

The draft law failed after former US President Donald Trump encouraged Republican senators to vote against it, even though before that the two parties seemed to have come to an agreement.

The negotiated content of the bill included, among the support for the war-torn countries, tighter immigration and asylum rules and the decision to close the border with Mexico.

Some of the Republican politicians, including leader of the republican party Mitch McConnell, have suggested that Trump did not want the bill passed because the crisis on the border was favourable to his campaign.

Ronald Reagan, the 40th US president was in office between 1981 and 1989 and became known for his hard-line anti-Moscow policy. He was also one of the most important world leaders, who contributed to ending the Cold War and to the collapse of the Soviet Union. (PAP)
