Sikorski warns Russia over future NATO airspace intrusions
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told the UN Security Council on Monday that Russia should not "whine" about NATO shooting down Moscow's weapons or aircraft next time they breach the alliance's airspace.
"I have only one request to the Russian government: if another missile or aircraft enters our airspace without permission, deliberately or by mistake, and gets shot down and the wreckage falls on NATO territory, please don't come here to whine about it. You have been warned," the top diplomat said, eyeing the Russian delegation.
During his speech, Sikorski said that Russia is incapable of living in peace with its neighbours, and recalled Moscow's contribution to previous conflicts, including the First and Second World War. He appealed to the Kremlin not to become the provoke another world-scale conflict.
The meeting was organised at Estonia's request, after three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered its territory without permission on Friday, marking Moscow's yet another military incursion into NATO airspace in recent weeks.
In mid-September, multiple Russian drones crossed into territory over Poland and, a few days later, Romania reported on a Russian drone breaching its airspace. (PAP)
