UN Security Council to convene at Poland's request - ministry
Poland has requested an extraordinary meeting of the United Nation's Security Council over the recent violation of Polish skies by Russian drones, the country's foreign ministry has announced.
"Following Poland's request, a UN Security Council emergency meeting will be convened regarding the violation of Polish airspace by Russia," the ministry wrote on X Thursday morning.
Later on Thursday, Krzysztof Szczerski, Poland's permanent representative to the UN, told PAP that the meeting will take place on Friday at 9 pm Polish time (3 pm local time).
Speaking to the private radio broadcaster RMF FM, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that Poland's intention for the meeting would be to "draw the attention of the whole world to this unprecedented Russian drone attack on a state which is a member not only of the UN but also of the European Union and NATO."
Earlier in the day, Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki told the public broadcaster TVP Info that Poland would actively pursue the matter of its airspace violation with the UN Security Council.
Spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Stephane Dujarric told a press conference on Wednesday that drone incursions into Polish airspace "again underlines the regional impact and real risk of expansion of this devastating conflict," referring to Russia's aggression on Ukraine.
Poland recorded 19 violations of its airspace by Russian drones overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, during a massive aerial attack Russia launched on Ukraine. All drones posing a threat were shot down.
The UN Security Council is one of the six main bodies of the United Nations Organisation, with primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. Like the UN General Assembly, it has the power to impose sanctions on member states.(PAP)wpb/mj
