EU-US relations are in crisis, but need to be protected - Tusk
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that the European Union needs to protect its relationship with the United States even if that is a more difficult task today.
Tusk went to Brussels on Thursday to attend an extraordinary summit of the European Council, convened by its President Antonio Costa to address mounting tensions with the US.
Speaking ahead of a meeting with EU leaders he told reporters that EU-US relations were in crisis, however they needed to be protected, even though this was much more difficult than ever before.
Tusk further said that the EU was built to ensure that coercion was not the essence of politics and that coercion was not a good method, especially in relations with transatlantic partners.
He added that as the Polish prime minister he will always be deeply committed to transatlantic relations and that the United States was absolutely crucial to Polish security.
Therefore, Tusk said it was important for everyone, including Washington, to understand the difference between domination and leadership.
The meeting in Brussels comes in the wake of recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who has threatened to impose tariffs on goods imported from eight European countries which defy the US's intention to acquire Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. (PAP)
