Last Russian consulate in Poland to close by Dec. 23

The Russian Consulate in the northern city of Gdansk, the last such mission in Poland, must cease operations by midnight on December 23, a spokesperson for Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has told PAP.

On Wednesday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced his decision to shut down the Russian consulate in Gdansk as a response to recent sabotage attacks on the Polish rail system, which officials allege were orchestrated by Moscow.

MFA Spokesman Maciej Wewior confirmed that a diplomatic note had been delivered to the Russian charge d'affaires and that "by midnight on December 23, the consulate must be vacated, and all consular staff must leave Polish territory."

Warsaw had previously closed Russian consulates in Poznan in October 2024 and in Krakow in May 2025, and Russia responded by shutting down Polish consulates in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.

Poland's remaining diplomatic presence in Russia now consists of its embassy in Moscow and the Consulate General in Irkutsk. (PAP)
