More Poles get married to foreign partners, stats office reports
An increasing number of Poles choose to marry a foreigner, and such unions constitute 4.1 percent of all marriages in Poland, the statistical office GUS has reported.
There were 5,517 marriages between a Pole and a foreigner in Poland in 2024, constituting 4.1 percent of all marriages in the country, GUS said in a report on Thursday. The percentage was the highest since 2006, when there were 3,583 such marriages.
In 2024, 2,647 Polish women married a foreigner and 2,870 Polish men chose a foreign partner.
Polish women most often got married to Ukrainians (534 marriages), Britons (276), Turks (182), Germans (139) and Italians (104).
Polish men, on the other hand, most often chose Ukrainian (2,013), Belarusian (215), Russian (56), Lithuanian (25) and British (24) partners.
"The record-breaking year of 2024 confirms that cross-border relationships are no longer the exception, but are becoming a permanent feature of the social landscape," GUS commented.
However, the percentage of marriages in which one partner is a foreigner is much higher in many other European countries. In 2023, the figure was 34.8 percent in Switzerland, 27.4 percent in Luxembourg and 16.5 percent in Spain, according to the EU's statistical office Eurostat. (PAP)
