No peace plan can weaken Europe, Polish PM says

The Ukraine peace plan proposed by the US cannot compromise the security of Europe, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said following a meeting of EU leaders in Luanda.

On Monday, leaders of the European Union and African Union convened in Angola to mark the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence. On the sidelines of the event, a special meeting of European leaders was held to discuss the 28-point US peace proposal for Ukraine.

Tusk, who took part in the discussions, told reporters that European leaders agreed on the need to revise elements of the proposal, saying that certain provisions were "completely unacceptable."

"No agreement, regardless of the parties involved, can weaken or undermine the security of Poland or of Europe as a whole. Everyone agreed on this," he said.

In Tusk's view, "the matter is a delicate one," because no one wants to discourage the Americans or President Donald Trump from continued engagement.

"We will do everything to ensure the United States remains on our side. These debates should take place with a united NATO position, not through separate national initiatives," he added.

The prime minister reiterated that European leaders are committed to achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. "That much is obvious. We will continue to support Ukraine. Its collapse would pose a direct threat to Poland. I hope this is finally understood by everyone, especially in Poland."

On the same day, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski held telephone conversations with his counterparts from Ukraine, Germany, France, the UK, Finland, and Italy, as reported by the foreign ministry. (PAP)
