Poland expects Ukraine to share data on sabotage convicts — minister

Ukraine should show more commitment to sharing information about individuals convicted in that country in absentia, as some have been found missing from the European law enforcement databases, Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski has said.

While in Brussels on Monday, Kierwinski was asked about media reports regarding the recent detention of three Ukrainian nationals in Warsaw for carrying hacking equipment during their trip. He said that he was waiting for a statement from Polish prosecutors before issuing any comments on the matter.

"Over the past two weeks, detentions in connection with acts of sabotage were occurring almost daily," he said.

"We expect Ukraine to provide ongoing information about all persons convicted in absentia there for acts of sabotage," Kierwinski said, adding that Warsaw would want to see those individuals registered in international law enforcement systems so that it would ban them from entering Poland.

He said that the matter is currently being discussed with Kyiv, including talks between Ukrainian and Polish justice ministers conducted last week, and his own meeting with Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko that should take place later this week.

The minister's call came after Kacper Wojteczko of the Warsaw municipal police reported on Monday that on November 26, police officers detained three Ukrainian nationals who were carrying, among other things, sophisticated hacking equipment and spy device detectors while travelling through Poland to Lithuania. The equipment was capable of enabling interference with state IT gear.

All three heard charges of fraud, computer fraud, and obtaining IT equipment and software with criminal intent, including an attempt to compromise national defence data. The court has ordered the men to be detained for a three-month pre-trial detention period. (PAP)
