Polish aviation plant to repair F-16 engines

Poland’s Military Aviation Works No. 2 (WZL-2) in Warsaw has signed an agreement with US-based GE Aerospace to develop maintenance, repair and overhaul capabilities for F110-GE-129 engines used in F-16 and F-15EX aircraft.

GE Aerospace's F110 Programme Director Sean Keith said on Wednesday that the deal would allow up to 90 percent of maintenance work to be carried out domestically, thereby reducing aircraft downtime and costs.

The agreement with WZL-2 will help identify opportunities to support Poland in maintaining F110 engines and strengthen local expertise, he said.

Under the agreement, both sides will analyse the requirements for conducting intermediate and depot-level maintenance, including tooling, machining, training, and the modernisation of engine test stands.

GE Aerospace and Boeing, which cooperate on defence programmes, are offering Poland Boeing's F-15EX fighters. The Defence Ministry has yet to make a decision, with the Polish Air Force considering the purchase of F-15EX, additional F-35A, or the Eurofighter Typhoon. (PAP)
