"On Thursday, January 1, the flag was changed over the Presidential Palace in Warsaw for the first time," reads a statement by the President's Office.

The flag will be changed every Saturday, starting January 3, in accordance with a new initiative launched by President Karol Nawrocki.

"The national flag is one of the most important symbols of the Polish statehood," the statement said, adding that, white and red, the two colours of the Polish flag, had never been only a ceremonial element but were a sign of the existence of the nation and the Republic of Poland, even when the country no longer existed in a formal way.

Pawel Szefernaker, chief of staff of President Karol Nawrocki's Office, announced that the flags changed every week would be handed over to schools on May 2, the Flag Day.

"The first 16 flags will be presented to 16 schools from all provinces in Poland," Szefernaker said, adding that, later on, the new initiative would continue and flags would be handed over "to the Polish people, both at home and abroad."

White and red were officially adopted as national colours in 1831, although they had been associated with Poland much earlier. (PAP)
