Two Poles among injured in fire at Swiss resort
Two Polish nationals are among 116 people injured in a fire that broke out at a bar in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana during a New Year's celebration, according to Swiss police.
Swiss police said on Monday that all 116 people injured in the bar fire in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana that killed 40 people had now been identified.
According to police, 83 people are still in hospital.
The information about the two Polish nationals was confirmed by Maciej Wiewior, a Foreign Ministry spokesman.
He said that their families are with them and declared the readiness of Polish consular services in Switzerland to offer them any necessary assistance.
The injured also include 68 Swiss citizens, 21 French nationals, 10 Italians, four Serbs and one person each from Australia, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Portugal and the Republic of Congo, according to a police statement. There were also four dual nationals: of France and Finland, France and Italy, Switzerland and Belgium, and Italy and the Philippines.
Investigators have said they believe festive sparkler candles atop Champagne bottles ignited the fire when they came too close to the ceiling.
Swiss authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the bar managers. The two are suspected of involuntary homicide, involuntary bodily harm and involuntarily causing a fire, according to the Valais region's chief prosecutor. (PAP)
