Air quality in Poland improved considerably year on year in 2023, a government office for environmental monitoring has reported.

The quality of Poland's air has long been a talking point in the country owing to a number of Polish cities being blighted by smog, especially during the winter months.

"The evaluation of the air quality in Poland in 2023 showed that it had considerably improved from 2022," the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection (GIOS) reported on Monday.

"The concentration of most pollutants was lower in 2023 than in 2022, and the areas where the permitted air pollutant levels were exceeded grew smaller," the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection (GIOS) reported on Monday.

In 2023, the permitted levels were exceeded in five types of air pollutants, namely, PM10 (a mixture of particles suspended in the air that do not exceed 10 microgrammes in diameter - PAP), arsenic and benzopyrenes in PM10, nitrogen dioxide and ozone.

As far as the areas with the impermissible PM10 level were concerned, their number fell to two in 2023 from 14 in 2022, and 25 in 2021, the GIOS wrote.

According to the GIOS, in 2023, there was no area in Poland which was affected by PM2.5 impermissible levels (PM2.5 are atmospheric aerosols with a maximum diameter of 2.5 micrometres - PAP). In 2022, there were 11 such zones, and 29 in 2021.

The GIOS is a government administration office responsible for the control of the observance of environmental protection regulations and environmental monitoring. (PAP)
