Close to 700,000 Poles register to vote for president abroad
Over 695,000 Polish citizens have registered to vote abroad in the upcoming second round of the presidential election, a foreign ministry official has announced.
Justyna Chrzanowska, the foreign minister's commissioner for the organisation of elections abroad, said it was a record number, comparing it to just over 509,000 registered for the first round of the presidential ballot on May 18.
Since May 20, over 211,000 more names have been added to the voters' lists, which were closed on Wednesday, she said.
"At this moment, this results in a (total) number of 695,886 potential voters," Chrzanowska reported.
"So it is a record number of Polish citizens who have registered for the election abroad," Chrzanowska concluded.
The number does not include people who will appear at polling stations with a certificate of the right to vote. In the first round of the election, some 17,000 voters produced such a paper at polling stations abroad.
In the closely-contested second round of the presidential ballot this coming Sunday, Rafal Trzaskowski will face off with Karol Nawrocki.
Poles will elect their next president for a five-year term of office. (PAP)
