Tusk took part in a teleconference with representatives from more than 30 countries, which also reviewed the results of the meeting held in Alaska on Friday between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, as well as Monday's talks in Washington.

"We all reaffirmed the need for continued support for Ukraine in the war with Russia," Tusk wrote on the X platform, adding it was "a positive prelude to the European Council that is just commencing."

On Monday, Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House before holding talks with European leaders. He later called Putin to discuss the possibility of arranging a meeting between Zelensky and Putin, to be followed by a trilateral format involving himself. Trump also declared readiness to help Europeans guarantee peace.

Zelensky said security guarantees for Kyiv included a US weapons package worth USD 90 billion, which was primarily focused on aircraft and air-defence systems.(PAP)
