Duda approves amendment to copyright law
Andrzej Duda, Poland’s president, has signed the amendment to the Act on Copyright and Related Rights, which implements two EU directives into the Polish legal order, the President's Office reported on Friday.
Minister of Culture and National Heritage Hanna Wroblewska commented on the decision on the X platform: "The amendment to the Copyright Act has been signed by the president. Polish creators, artists and publishers can breathe a sigh of relief."
"I would also like to invite everyone to the Copyright Forum, where we will discuss issues related to the regulation of copyright law periodically - once a quarter," she added, announcing that the first one is scheduled for September 10.
The amendment proposal sparked protests among authors and publishers who sought the new legislation to ensure access to royalties from streaming services and a mediation instrument between press publishers and big tech corporations.
New regulations prepared by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage following the social consultations introduce provisions specifying the need to guarantee creators fair remuneration appropriate to the extent of the right granted, the nature, extent, and benefits derived from the use of the work, the President's Office wrote in the statement.
The legislation also introduces mediation between publishers and digital platforms to determine remuneration, to be conducted by the Office of Electronic Communications. (PAP)
