Germany will station Eurofighters in Poland to bolster NATO's eastern flank
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced on Wednesday that Berlin will deploy Eurofighter jets to Malbork in northern Poland to patrol the skies amid efforts to strengthen security along NATO's eastern flank.
According to Reuters, citing a spokesperson for the German defence minister, the plans include sending two Eurofighter jets, which will be stationed in Poland from December 2025 to March 2026.
Pistorius, who arrived in Brussels for a meeting of NATO defence ministers, said Berlin will invest EUR 10 billion over the coming years in various types of military drones to strengthen NATO's air defences against the Russian threat.
This would add to Germany's existing military engagement in the security of the Alliance. German troops are currently providing air defence for Poland's Rzeszow-Jasionka airport, which has become NATO's key logistics hub for military aid to Ukraine, as part of a broader NATO initiative to support Kyiv.
In the wake of a flurry of recent Russia-orchestrated NATO airspace violations and multiple drones spotted at airports and military installations across Germany, Berlin has been vocal about the incidents, voicing concerns about Moscow's moves. On Monday, Germany's foreign intelligence chief, Martin Jaeger, warned that a "heated confrontation" with Russia could unfold at any moment. (PAP)yb/mf
