Gov't tells MoD to advance plans for permanent US military base in Poland
The Polish government has authorised the defence minister to launch actions aimed at establishing a permanent base of US forces in Poland, the government spokesman said after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
Adam Szlapka told reporters that the government had approved a resolution to this effect since it had to make very detailed preparations regarding this matter.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced before the government meeting that it was necessary to get prepared to implement President Donald Trump's decision to deploy "more American troops to Poland," so that US soldiers have a place to be stationed.
"The point is to create logistic, financial, organisational and housing conditions. ...this is a very serious organisational and financial undertaking, so if we are serious about a permanent base, we must start preparing Poland for it," Tusk said.
Having recalled that Polish governments had been striving for years for a permanent presence of allied forces in Poland, Szlapka said that, "here, all the governments, I think, are very consistent, since we all want the presence to be permanent, not rotational."
"I have been authorised to conduct talks and negotiations with the American side and to coordinate preparations for necessary infrastructure and logistic support," Deputy Prime Minister and defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on X later on Tuesday.
"This is another step consolidating the US commitment in Poland," he underlined.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Marcin Przydacz, the head of the President's Office, said that US President Donald Trump had reaffirmed the United States' commitment to deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland during talks with President Karol Nawrocki, who visited Washington over the weekend to attend celebrations marking Trump's 80th birthday.
After his return to Poland, President Nawrocki will invite the defence minister to discuss further steps concerning this matter.
